About the Role
Core is the first stop for most families who come to CASA. The program serves children ages three to 17 and provides general mental health treatment for a wide range of concerns. From Core, the therapist is able to step families up or down into more appropriate levels of service if needed.
The Concurrent Counsellor will:
- Provide services unique to the appropriate professional discipline (psychology, social work, nursing, occupational therapy).
- Provide person-focused, holistic, recovery-oriented, culturally-guided, strengths-based, and trauma-informed assessments/treatment.
- Contribute to the co-development of collaborative care plans and provide a range of services appropriate to the child/youth and their families or caregivers to meet the mental health and substance/process use concerns identified in in partnership with the broader team.
- Support development of reflective capacity by conjointly creating and monitoring recovery-oriented goals and adapting care plans as needed, whilst prioritizing the inclusion of diverse needs and strengths in the goals.
- Facilitate psycho-educational, support, and treatment groups for adolescents and parents.
- Carry out case management functions including convening case conferences and liaising with community services and other professionals involved with the youth and family (especially education, social services, justice, and health), ensuring to advocate for social inclusion and address social determinants.
- Advocate on behalf of the youth and family as appropriate and promote self-determination and autonomy development. Meet youth and families at their starting point, which may include community-based meetings and supportive sessions to build change readiness and motivation.
- Contribute to staff knowledge and understanding of discipline-specific issues.
- Participate regularly and constructively in program and clinical team meetings.
- Contribute to the development and use of performance indicators and other activities related to continuous quality improvement.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree (that permits registration under the Health Professions Act) with course work in Substance Use Treatment or Concurrent Disorders and/or work experience or post-graduate training.
- One to two years of Substance Use Counselling experience in community or tertiary setting is preferred.
- Experience working in collaborative care models and/or with multi-disciplinary teams is preferred.
- Experience in assessment and treatment.
- Experience in managing diverse and complex caseloads.
- Practical experience in a children’s mental health treatment setting is preferred.
Conditions of Employment
- A satisfactory Criminal Records Check with Vulnerable Sector Search. This would be the financial responsibility of the successful candidate.
- A satisfactory Child Intervention Check.
