About the Role
The Preschool Day Program provides specialized early childhood mental health care in a small classroom setting. The family and care team work together to support the child’s social, emotional, academic and physical development. The program works to strengthen the family’s ability to support their child by promoting parent confidence. Children attend the program two full days a week during the school year.


The Children’s Day Program provides group, family and individual therapy while also providing education in a small classroom setting. Children are encouraged to strengthen their existing abilities and develop new skills. Areas of focus include social skills, academic functioning and emotional and sensory awareness. Children attend the program daily during the school year.

The Mental Health Nurse will:
  • Complete appropriate nursing assessments (physical and psychosocial) and utilize nursing processes to identify mental health concerns and current risk.
  • Incorporate objective findings such as laboratory, diagnostic findings, specialist reports and past history:
    • medication reconciliation;
    • monitoring of physiological parameters;
    • medication side effects;
    • suicide risk assessment.
  • Integrate assessment and other data to establish appropriate long and short-term goals and provide nursing interventions to promote, maintain and restore health.
  • Monitor, evaluate and modify nursing care plans based on effectiveness of interventions and/or changes in condition or environment, in collaboration with the patient and care team.
  • Provide information and instructions to assist in understanding the clinical condition, ongoing care and management.
  • Assist/co-facilitate individual or group therapy.
  • Accurately document findings in the electronic health record.
  • Liaise with other professionals to promote continuity of care and assist families with connecting to a primary care physician.
  • Provide nursing support to a number of concurrently operating teams and programs in a variety of settings and across multiple sites.
  • Identify service delivery improvements and suggest enhancements with the lens of evidence-informed practice and CASA strategic and operational plans.



Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree is preferred. 
  • A minimum of three to five years of recent pediatric experience in an ambulatory care setting which has included the care and management of children with mental health problems. Acute care experience in children’s mental health would be an asset.
  • Must be a member in good standing with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta or College of Registered Psychiatric Nurses of Alberta.
  • Knowledge of the Health Information and Protection of Privacy Information Acts in addition to professional organization’s ethics and standards of practice.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding personal and sensitive information.
  • Familiarity with electronic medical records or similar information systems.
  • Ability to apply theoretical knowledge in a clinical setting, utilize relevant research findings in daily nursing practice, identify barriers and facilitate solution development.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.
  • Commitment to ongoing quality improvement and engaging in continuous learning opportunities for personal and professional growth.
  • Ability to make evidence-based decisions, work across programs and services, and to work and communicate in a cooperative, respective manner with all staff.
  • Knowledge of family therapy and group therapy is an asset.
Conditions of Employment
  • A satisfactory Criminal Records Check with Vulnerable Sector Search. This would be the financial responsibility of the successful candidate.
  • A satisfactory Child Intervention Check.
  • Ability to pass and maintain Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI) certification (training provided by CASA), as well as physical ability to perform all interventions.
